Abstract

Background and Aim: There is paucity of information on the relationship between physical activity level and health status among artisans. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between physical activity level and self-rated health status among artisans in Osun State.

Materials and Methods: Three hundred and fifty four artisans participated in a cross sectional study in Osun State. International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and Short Form (SF 12) health survey questionnaire were administered to obtain data on physical activity level and health status respectively. Ethical issues were considered. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Alpha level was set at 0.05.

Results: Respondents were all male and their ages ranged between 25 – 60 years. Automobile mechanics, Bricklayers, Carpenters and Welders constituted 22.6%, 26.8%, 25.7% and 24.9% respectively. Three hundred and fifty one (351) had high physical activity and none reported low physical activity. Respondents rated their health status as above, average and below average with 56.2%, 4% and 39.8% respectively. There was no significant association between age, occupation and physical activity (p = 0.425; p = 0.829). However, there was a significant association between physical activity and health status (p = 0.001) but not with mental wellness (p = 0.648).

Conclusion: The study concluded that physical activity levels among artisans in Osun State was high and significantly related to self-rated health status but not significantly associated with mental wellness.
