Abstract

Objective : To evaluate the impact of appropriate wheelchair use in the lives of children with reduced mobility from 2 to 18 years and its impact on their caregivers.

Methodology : We conducted a 4-month cross-sectional study of 100 disabled children and their caregivers. It consisted in appreciating the impact of the use of adapted wheelchairs in the daily life of the user and his caregiver. The Family Impact  of Assistance Technology Scale, allowed us to assess the level of acceptance, autonomy and safety of the child, his interaction with the environment, satisfaction, and supervision by caregivers, and the effort provided and the relief of these. To find the link between different concepts, we used the correlation calculus of Bravais Pearson.

Results : After evaluating our different subjects, we found that most were female with 57% and cerebral palsy was the most common disability with 81% (p <0.05). The parents of children with disabilities responded with a score above 4 in relation to the various areas of the Family Impact Of Assistance Technology Scale including: acceptance, autonomy, satisfaction, safety, relief, effort provided by caregivers, family and social interaction, supervision. In addition, this study reveals that there is a significant link between the different domains (p <0.05).

Conclusion: This study shows that the use of adapted wheelchairs enables children with disabilities to improve their independence and to relieve carers from permanent assistance. A reciprocal link between the use of adapted wheelchairs and the independence of the handicapped child.

Key words: disabled child, appropriate wheelchair, mobility.
