Abstract

Introduction:

Stroke is the sudden loss of neurological function as a result of ischemic or hemorrhagic cerebrovascular disease. It is a serious condition because of its relatively high mortality and the heavy handicap it generates, including communication disorders. Their management involves speeech therapy.

This work proposed to study the contribution of speech-language pathology in the recovery of these disorders and the factors associated with the latter in patients treated in speech therapy at the CUMPR of the CNHU-HKM.

Method: Retrosprective descriptive and analytical study of patients with stroke, seen in speech therapy from 2013 to 2018. The data were collected, entered and analyzed using Epi data 3.1, SPSS 18, Epi Info 7 software.

Results: One hundred and seventy-seven (167) patients were recruited, 65,9% of whom were men and the average age was 49 years. The disosrders consisted mainly of aphasia (47.5%), dysarthria (38.10%) and dysphonia (14.29%). 64 % of patients had a satisfactory result. The main factors that negatively affected the level of recovery in the others were :the existence of hemiplegia, the number of sessions and the existence of comprehension disorders.

Conclusion : Stroke reaches men more and aphasia is the communication disorder it generates the most. At the CNHU-HKM CUMPR, two-thirds of patients had a satisfactory recovery, while one-third did not. Different factors have been identified as predictors of unfavorable developments

Key words: stroke, communication disorders, aphasia, dysarthria, dysphonia
