Development and Feasibility Testing of a Walk-Talk Mobile-Phone Based Physical Activity Intervention in Pregnancy

Abstract


Background and objectives: Digital platforms are increasingly used to improve health behaviour. However, validated pregnancy-related apps are limited. This study developed and tested the feasibility of a six minute walk-talk smartphone app for pregnant women. Materials and methods: The development followed standard iterative process. Forty consenting pregnant women participated in the feasibility testing. Feasibility of the app were assessed in terms of usability, satisfaction and user’s experience using the system usability scale and mobile application rating scale. Results: A high usability (80.0%) was observed for the App. The most rated attributes of the app were the ease of learning to use of app (75%), integration of app function (75%), ease of use of app (75%) and confidence about the use of the app (75%). Using the mobile application rating scale, aesthetic (10.30 ± 1.7, out of a total of 15) and app subjective quality (15.00 ± 3.6, out of a total of 20) were the most rated attributes of the app. The total app quality rating was 16.52 ± 3.0 out of 22.5.  The app mostly led to increase awareness (90.0%), intentions and behavioural change (82.5%). Conclusion: The smartphone-based six-minute walk-talk physical activity application (app) has high feasibility and acceptability. The finding of this study support assertion that mobile phones may provide a unique means of administering health interventions to populations.
