Abstract

BACKGROUND: The 4th Industrial Revolution as the previous will undoubtedly have consequences on the human lifestyle and health. Among these consequences, physical inactivity and unhealthy diet are the main modifiable risk factors of cardiovascular diseases. The University of Parakou, through its Faculty of Medicine and its School of Public Health and Epidemiology is preparing to deal with these fall-out of the new industrial revolution.

AIMS: To present the scientific work carried out over the last years in Benin in the field of stroke rehabilitation through a North/South collaboration between Benin and Belgium.

DESIGN: Scoping review.

DATA SOURCES: Pubmed/Medline, Science Direct, and Google Scholar were searched.

STUDY SELECTION: The literature search was conducted in March 2019. Included studies were published in English or French language and involved stroke samples from Benin.

RESULTS: A total of 13 scientific publications in outstanding journals has been identified and included in the qualitative analysis. The 13 studies involved 1024 stroke survivors. Four studies used Rasch-analysis to validate new scales for functional evaluation after stroke, 3 studies examined the reliability and responsiveness of the new scales, 3 studies were interventional studies for stroke rehabilitation, and 2 studies were observational studies.

CONCLUSIONS: High quality studies have been done in Benin in the last ten years in the field of stroke rehabilitation. They led to publications in outstanding journals on the functional evaluation of stroke patients. The next step will be interventional studies for modifiable risk factors of cardiovascular diseases.
